Title: Managing the Atom Fellowships

SYNOPSIS: The sponsor will provide fellowships for pre-doctoral,
post-doctoral, and mid-career researchers for ten months, with a
possibility for renewal, addressing the risks posed by nuclear weapons
and weapons-usable materials; assessing the future of civilian nuclear
power; strengthening international nuclear institutions; and
strengthening democratic management of nuclear technology through
improved access to information, broader public participation, and more
effective regulation and oversight.

OBJECTIVES: Researchers interested in security and safeguards
for nuclear and radiological materials and facilities, and other
aspects of preventing nuclear terrorism, are particularly encouraged
to apply. Also encouraged are proposals examining steps toward the
prohibition of nuclear weapons. <P>Fellows affiliated with the MTA
Project attend regular research group meetings, participate in MTA
events, and contribute to this web page and other MTA activities.
Fellows are expected to pursue research with an orientation toward
producing policy recommendations and to publish substantial work
produced during their time with the Project. Potential fellows should
apply through the Belfer Center's regular fellowship process to one of
the programs specified above and should highlight research interests
that are relevant to the MTA Project.
ELIGIBILITY
Applications for fellowships are welcome from recent recipients of
the Ph.D. or equivalent degree, university faculty members, and
employees of government, military, international, humanitarian, and
private research institutions who have appropriate professional
experience. The Belfer Center seeks applications from political
scientists, lawyers, economists, those in the natural sciences, and
others of diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The Center also encourages
applications from women, minorities, and citizens of all
countries.
FUNDING
The Belfer Center offers ten-month stipends of $34,000 to
post-doctoral and advanced research fellows and $20,000 to
pre-doctoral fellows. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply
for other sources of funding. (cam)
