Mission of the Department

The mission of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering is to provide a high quality undergraduate and graduate education in the civil, construction, and environmental engineering areas as well as the advising and other support needed to ensure the students' academic success and preparation for a productive engineering career. In addition, through research and continuing professional development, the faculty produce, enhance and promote new developments within their areas of expertise for the benefit of society and the furtherance of their profession.

 

Educational Objectives

The Educational Objectives of the Construction Engineering program represent qualities or abilities expected from our graduates approximately 5 years after graduation, and are formulated as follows:

1. To provide graduates with the technical knowledge and skills required to practice construction engineering and manage construction projects.
2. To provide graduates with an understanding of the ethical, social, legal, and professional issues faced by the construction industry.
3. And to provide graduates with a solid foundation for graduate studies, continuing education, and lifelong professional development.

 

Construction Engineering Program Outcomes

By the time of graduation our graduates will be able to:

1. Apply Knowledge of mathematics through multi-variate calculus, calculus-based physics, chemistry and one additional area of science
2. Drawing from a broad education, explain the globlal, economic, environmental, and societal impacts of engineering solutions
3. Explain how contemporary issues affect the identification, formulation, and solution of engineering problems
4. Design a component, system or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
5. Design a Civil or Construction engineering experiment to meet a need, conduct the experiment, and analyze resulting data
6. Apply knowledge to identify, formulate and solve construction engineering problems
7. Function effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
8. Organize and deliver effective verbal, written and graphical communications
9. Apply relevant techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools neccesary for engineering practice
10. Analyze a complex situation involving multiple conflicting professional and ethical interests to determine an appropriate course of action
11. Recognize the need for and demonstrate an ability to engage in life-long learning and explain the importance of professional licensure
12. Explain key concepts and problem-solving processes used in management
13. Explain key concepts and problem-solving processes used in businees. public policy, and public administration
14. Explain the role of a leader, leadership principles and attitudes to the effective practice of Construction Engineering
